A Unique Breed

K. Votka's Boone

The Norwegian Lundehund

The rare Norwegian Lundehund is one of the most unique and ancient purebred dogs in existence. Some scientists suggest Lundehunds predate the last Ice Age. Vikings capitalized on the Lundehund’s ability to scale seacliffs and used the dogs to hunt puffins. In Norwegian, Lunde means “Puffin”  and Hund means “Dog”—thus, Puffin Dog—and is pronounced  ' lÜn-dah-hÜnd.

Nimble climbers

Due to their physical anomalies.

Their flexible shoulders, for example, allow the dogs to hug cliffs and control steep descents. A minimum of six, fully-functional toes on each foot and elongated rear pads—resembling a Nike swoosh—grip slick and uneven surfaces. The toes as well as a pliable spine and neck enabled the dogs to dig and squeeze into narrow crevices to retrieve the nesting puffins. During World War II and again in the early 1960s, distemper epidemics decimated  the breed. As a result, only six known Lundehunds were left on earth! Thanks to  the dedication of preservation breeders, Lundehunds are still with us—about 100 in  North America and approximately 2,500 worldwide.

Facts & Life With Lundies

• They’re the only dog with extra toes on all four feet. (They’re toes, not dewclaws.)

• Males measure 13”–15”, females 12”–14” at the withers. Weight is proportionate to height.

• The harsh outer coat and soft undercoat are shed twice yearly. While dirt falls off the  hair, the dogs still need regular baths and brushing.

• Ears independently move forward, backward, and up and can clamp shut.

• Lundies are playful, clever, and aloof; they don’t like loud noises.

• Daily exercise is required. Hikes, walks, beach combing, and rock scrambling are among their favorite outdoor activities. They also enjoy scent work, agility, barn hunt, lure coursing, and conformation.

• Lundies get along with dogs and cats. Some have a strong prey drive and may not be ideal for homes with pet rabbits, rodents, or birds.

• This breed needs to be fed a low-fat diet & have regular blood work to monitor protein levels.

All Lundehunds have this flexibility. It is not allowed to demonstrate at confirmation shows. If the dog is not warm and loose or possibly anxious, it could injure the animal. Think about someone forcing you into the splits.

Breed standard is 6 toes on each foot. It is all about good traction on steep terrain.

A great example of the natural flexibility in a napping puppy.
